Parading in the Sambadrome for Rio Carnival is not like Halloween. You can’t just pick a costume you love and join a Samba School. That would be suitable for a street party during carnival where everybody dress as they please, following the many blocos and bands. For the big carnival parade at the Sambadrome the situation is a bit different.
Each and every samba school will have their own set of carnival costumes, designed according to that year’s theme. Carnival Costumes are available for the Access Group, which parades on Saturday, as well as the Special Group parading Sunday and Monday. Each wing of the parade or “Ala” will have its own special costume, so you have many carnival outfits to choose from. You can view all these on our website under Costume Shop, as well as how much they cost. Earlier before the parade, you will receive by email a copy of the school’s theme song and lyrics which you can practice before the big day.
Carnival costumes have to be pre ordered in the short 60-day period in which they become available, from mid-November thru mid-January. Remember they have to be made to order and according to the year’s theme. With RioCostumes.com, you can easily select your costume online. If you and your friends want to parade together make sure you choose the same costumes, so you can be all together parading within the same wing.
After you make the decision on your carnival costume, we ask you for some information on your own measurements so we can pass that along to the samba school, which will make it to order. You will probably be able to choose from sizes Small to Extra Large. The number of your shoes will be requested as well. But you should be asking yourself how you are going to receive your actual costume. Here’s how: once your payment has been completed you will receive a confirmation email with all instructions, including the address to pick it up on the two days the precede Carnival.
One important thing that is normally forgotten: it is important purchase your carnival costumes as early as possible, as there are usually only a few available per wing. Gringos are welcome anywhere but the samba schools limit the number of foreigners per wing, for the simple fact that they do no master the samba dance and do not normally know how to sing the samba. An unbalanced wing full of beginners would probably make the school to fail in the subject “samba and harmony”.
Also, make sure that you don’t wear your costume before the parade day, because if the costumes are not 100% intact you will not be allowed to participate. Incomplete costumes can result in negative points for the Samba school and thus school directors are very particular about this.
Aren’t you and your friends ready to buy your carnival costumes and be part of the experience of a lifetime?
